In January 2024 we revived the June 2021 Black Scrolls Modular Map-Tiles Bundle featuring beautiful full-color digital battlemat tiles created by Hungarian graphic artist Antal Kéninger of Black Scrolls Games. Funded in a November 2017 Kickstarter campaign, the mix-and-match tiles in the Cities of the Black Scrolls series depict medieval city and village buildings, castle and fortress walls, inns and arenas, cathedral aisles and dungeon crypts. Print these modular .PDFs and assemble them into gorgeous battle sites for your game table, or import the digital .JPG and .PNG images into your favorite virtual tabletop like Roll20, Foundry VTT, or Fantasy Grounds.
Each Black Scrolls set includes dozens of digital tiles. Many outdoor scenes have day and night versions; many room tiles are provided both empty and furnished. Each set includes “cutout” props and accessories like tents, doors, gates, and dungeon traps. You can build any inn, village, castle, fortress, or dungeon on the spot, and expand it by just placing another tile.
There were four modular map sets in this revived June 2021 offer’s Village Collection (retail value $35) as DRM-free .PDFs and .JPG image files, including Medieval Fantasy Village, Modular Inn, Cemetery, and – newly added in this revival – Docks and Canals.
(Those who purchased this Black Scrolls offer in its original June 2021 run also received the newly added Docks and Canals automatically on their Wizard’s Cabinet download page and in their linked DriveThruRPG Library. When you buy a Bundle of Holding early, you never worry about missing a title added later – even much later.)
Customers who paid more than the threshold (average) price also got this revival’s entire City Collection with seven more titles worth an additional $60, including City (plus the free City and Fortress Transition Tiles), Fortress, Castle, Moat and River, Cathedral, Dark Crypts, and – also newly added this time around – Trenches, a set designed for World War I scenarios but easily adapted to medieval fantasy battlegrounds. (And, again, if you bought the June 2021 offer, you got this new set automatically.)
Ten percent of each payment (after gateway fees) went to this Black Scrolls offer’s designated charity, the Diana Jones Award Emerging Designer Program. Each year, the Diana Jones Award for Excellence in Gaming, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, amplifies the voices of up-and-coming game designers by featuring them during an expenses-paid visit to Gen Con. The global Emerging Designer Program focuses on creators from marginalized communities.

Oh, for–I don’t know how that came out as “unfriended”. Sorry for the confusion.
Hey, can’t tell for sure; are these only grinded, or do they also come in unfriended? Matters for VTT use.
I have no idea what that means, sorry.
Gridded maps have squares and/or hexes already printed on the maps (or tiles). Ungridded just have the artwork. The issue is that when using them with a VTT, you usually have a grid overlay being produced by the VTT once you place a map; unless you’re lucky enough to have the grid printed the map you’re already using happen to align well. it creates a visual problem.
Most, but not all, modern map and tile sellers provide both gridded (usually with squares) and ungridded versions within a set. Some of the tiles in illustrations appear to have no grid, but it doesn’t seem to be spelled out if this is always available or not.
Ah, GRIDDED and UNGRIDDED! Not “grinded” and “unfriended.” Each .PDF includes a grid layer you can turn on before printing. You need Adobe Acrobat to use the layer feature.
