In May 2023 we presented two offers featuring the Lankhmar campaign setting for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games: the revived April 2021 DCC Lankhmar Bundle and its all-new companion, Lankhmar Thieves. Authorized by the estate of master fantasist Fritz Leiber and funded in a March 2017 Kickstarter campaign, Goodman’s Lankhmar line lets you explore the City of Seven-Score Thousand Smokes, Lankhmar, and follow in the footsteps of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser across the fantastic realm of Nehwon.
Fritz Leiber (1910-1992) chronicled the adventures of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser for more than 50 years. (To describe these stories, Leiber coined the term “sword and sorcery.”) From their home in Lankhmar, the two rogues gallivant across their fantastic realm of Nehwon. Fafhrd, a tall and brawny northern barbarian, is a warlock in service to the wizard Ningauble of the Seven Eyes. The small and nimble Mouser, a mercurial thief, was once apprenticed to Sheelba of the Eyeless Face. Through three dozen picaresque stories that range widely in tone, the two peerless swordsmen perfectly model the typical D&D player character. No wonder one of TSR’s first products was Leiber’s Lankhmar board game, and AD&D 2E had a well-regarded line of Lankhmar – City of Adventure supplements.
Goodman’s 2018 boxed set expands the DCC RPG rules to match the tone of Leiber’s most exciting stories. A new “Fleeting Luck” mechanic lets good fortune bless your characters one minute, only to dash their hopes the next. Goodman Games has followed up with a typically strong support line of many Lankhmar modules, as well as several interesting blog posts about Fritz Leiber and his work.
DCC LANKHMAR [from Apr 2021]
This revived April 2021 DCC Lankhmar had the original boxed campaign set and early modules. This revived offer’s Starter Collection (retail value $47) included the massive Dungeon Crawl Classics Lankhmar boxed set and the introductory adventure Gang Lords of Lankhmar. We also include the DCC Quick Start Rules.
The Bonus Collection added eight more titles worth an additional $56, including The Land of Eight Cities, A Dozen Lankhmar Locations, The Fence’s Fortuitous Folly, Acting Up in Lankhmar, Grave Matters, Rats of Ilthmar, Violence for Votishal, and the aptly titled Blasphemy and Larceny in Lankhmar.
LANKHMAR THIEVES [all-new]
The all-new companion offer, Lankhmar Thieves, added recent modules such as the sprawling 164-page Gen Con tournament adventure The Greatest Thieves in Lankhmar. This offer’s Lankhmar Collection (retail value $71) included The Greatest Thieves in Lankhmar and seven other other scenarios for low-level characters (levels 1-3): #6 Cheating Death, #10 Unholy Nights in Lankhmar, #12 Mercy on the Day of the Eel, #13 Treachery in the Beggar City, the short preview adventure Masks of Lankhmar, and two Goodman Games releases that include Lankhmar scenarios – DCC RPG Free RPG Day 2016 and the DCC Day 2020 Adventure Pack.
Ten percent of each payment (after gateway fees) for these two Lankhmar offers went to the charity designated by Goodman Games owner Joseph Goodman, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. For more than 30 years the SF-Marin Food Bank has worked to end hunger in the San Francisco Bay Area, where one in four neighbors is at risk of hunger.
